I had to explain that "when Mummy was little" we stuffed old newspapers into old clothes and sewed waistbands together and put trouser legs in wellington boots and made heads out of (what did we make the heads out of, I really can't remember) and carted the whole thing about for days while the stuffing fell out all over the place collecting pennies which we'd then invest in fireworks for Bonfire Night
none of this turn up with your bucket, looking cute on a door step, ring the bell, and someone gives you a whole load of chocolate without you even having to sing a carol for your supper. . .
(doing that made me think of my mother saying "you don't know how lucky you are" and then regaling me with stories of growing up in the war)
